FEH stands for Foss, Engelstad, and Heil, three influential architects in our firm’s evolution and history. The initial entrepreneur was Andrew H. Foss, who launched the firm in 1898. Our established history of quality design and a deep commitment to the collaborative process has brought innovative results. Our firm culture is nurtured by seasoned leadership, and we continue to bring young professionals on board to ensure a strong future.
East Dubuque Middle and High School was featured in LEARNING BY DESIGN Magazine as an outstanding project. The school has been recognized for showcasing best practices in educational facility design.
Sioux City’s Hunt Elementary School was featured in LEARNING BY DESIGN Magazine as an outstanding project. The school has been recognized as an award-winning benchmark facility for incorporating next-generation learning space design and planning methodologies.
The Taubman Block Building won the Adrian D. Anderson Award at the 2023 Preserve Iowa Summit. The Taubman Block is located in Maquoketa, where it was built in 1920 to replace the original 1890s Taubman building after its catastrophic collapse in 1919. By 2019, the Taubman Block had fallen into a state of disrepair; gutted and standing empty. Today the building contributes once again to the vitality of downtown Maquoketa. A craft brewery and a clothing boutique occupy the first floor and two modern apartments are on the second floor.
William L. Bradley House won the Judith A. McClure Award at the 2023 Preserve Iowa Summit. This award recognizes outstanding preservation of a residential property using State Historic Preservation and Cultural & Entertainment District Tax Credit Program incentives. Built in 1872, the Bradley House is located in the Jackson Park Historic District in Dubuque. Andrew and Emily McCready, completed the full renovation.

563 Design joined FEH Design in business! 563 Design launched in 2017 by Andrew & Emily McCready with a focus on local design: commercial, historic preservation and rehabilitation, and residential projects. Andrew McCready joined FEH Design as Principal Architect and Shareholder, Emily McCready now serves in a Business Development role. They join a strong team of architects, structural engineers, and interior designers and expand FEH Design’s firm wide ownership.
FEH President Denny Sharp to hand the baton to Kevin Eipperle at the end of this year. Denny will continue to focus on the architectural side of our business (AKA the fun stuff). Kevin has been mentoring with Denny and is ready to lead the FEH team into the future!
Our firm, along with many of Ron’s friends and family, will be donating $50,000 towards the Ron Speckmann, AIA, Class of 1985, Memorial Scholarship at Iowa State University over the next four years to create a perpetual scholarship fund.
