CALEB STURTZ

Associate AIA

Intern Architect

As a recent ISU grad, Caleb brings a fresh, imaginative perspective to every design project he touches. He’s always sketching out ideas and exploring new options with our design team… and when he’s not, you’ll probably find him taking in all there is to do in the Des Moines metro area OR losing to his wife at a board game!

Q&A with Intern Architect Caleb

How did you decide on your career path?

I was always interested in art and math, so naturally people told me I should be an architect (having no idea what I was getting into!). In high school at Southeast Polk, I took a drafting class and fell in love with designing, creating blueprints, and architecture. Something about drawing perfectly straight lines in seconds was fascinating to an artist like me, and I couldn’t stop. I applied to Iowa State University and got into the architecture program and now here we are!

What is your favorite part of the design process?

The schematic design phase. Sketching out ideas and running through all sorts of possibilities is a fascinating process because it has so much impact on the final design of the building or space. It’s always exciting to know your ideas will make an impact on the project

How are you creating vibrant communities through design?

Working on the Pleasant Hill Park Pavilion has been really special for me, because I grew up there and spent a lot of time as a kid in that park. I’m proud to help create better spaces for the next generation of young people in my hometown.

What makes Des Moines a great place to live?

The people in the Des Moines area are amazing. Everyone seems to care for each other and is kind to one another. There are also lots of great events always going on to keep things interesting and exciting.
