The design for three multi-story campus apartment buildings is a contemporary interpretation of the surrounding neighborhood that blends well with the materials and details of the adjacent residential housing and the Greek Row residential houses. This design-build project teamed FEH DESIGN with Hubbell Realty to provide apartment-style campus housing for 500 upper-level Drake students. The buildings provide an attractive transition from campus buildings to adjacent residential areas. The concept was to develop a “village” atmosphere where students are part of a lifestyle community where they can live, work, study and socialize within this unique environment. The complex creates a central community area where students can gather in a semi-private area while still being adjacent to the main east-west pedestrian corridor between Greek Row and other off campus housing and the main campus. This east-west pedestrian way has been greatly enhanced with streetscape improvements creating an energetic and safe pedestrian mall at the edge of the village. Students are only steps from campus, with available on-site parking and retail opportunities for shopping, dining or a cup of coffee on the patio to watch students pass by on their way to / from campus. This new campus community has become a lively node of activity on that main pedestrian way.
