The National Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium project included a variety of upgrades to enhance both visitor experiences and animal habitats. A new otter exhibit was added to the exterior of the William Woodward Mississippi River Center, while the existing otter exhibit was transformed into a bird aviary. The aviary features laminated glazing to reduce costs and is connected to the interior otter habitat. A translucent roof panel was added to protect birds from exposure to avian flu, and three additional aviary enclosures were incorporated on the lower level for temporary holding.
Inside the museum, the main gallery received several new exhibits, including a relocated paddlefish aquarium, a trout stream exhibit, and a reptile room. New flooring throughout the gallery features a meandering stream design, enhancing the naturalistic feel of the space.
